Heart of Darkness
Small canvas with brutalist clay structure creating a sarcophagus for customised original Victorian cabinet card presented in relief.
First in the series, it establishes the basis for the following work and ponders a sense of loss, and confusion inspired by the effects of old age and dementia.
Inside the structure is decoupaged verses from the Book of Common Prayer and the phrase “My sight is going” is affixed to the cabinet card, indicating a sense of loss and confusion.
The external section is adorned with abstract impasto in rich burgundy, orange, red and gold, shells, and linen tapes. The title from a vintage Joseph Conrad novel is pasted to the top left end corner, and gives the context, “Heart of Darkness”.
The reverse is heavily decoupaged with religious verses and artefacts from 1940s Rosicrucian recruitment pamphlets and is monographed, signed and dated.
Mixed media on stretched canvas 13x18cm, depth 5cm.
