Shit Happens
£400.00
Based on the four cardinal elements with collage, impasto, found objects and cut up text.
A lapel badge, “Shit Happens” give the piece it’s title but also alludes to the process of evolution during construction. Changes, marks and imperfections are maintained, suggesting a subconscious guiding hand unknown and ineffable.
Twin discs, representing conscious and unconscious, contain a memento mori (obscuring redacted Biblical text), above a male and female form which archly hark back towards NASA’s Voyager probe. In the way that Voyager searched for life beyond our solar system, this disc depicts the continual search for meaning and purpose in life.
Central to the composition is a plastic toy gun, challenging fate by pointing heavenwards. Next to the gun a cutup cryptically suggests that “REMEMBER, The SECRET IS THE THOUGHT Unknown!”
The final quadrant is occupied by an illustration from a vintage studio pottery box which originally contained a sailor. This alludes to the constant voyage in search of the truth and context of our place in the Cosmos.
Inscribed, monogrammed “PTL” and dated to the bottom, left edge of the canvas.
Liquitex acrylics, collage, plastics and wooden discs on a 12″ (30cm) square stretched canvas.
